More Flights to the Oaxaca Coast: What Aeroméxico’s Expansion Means for Huatulco and Puerto Escondido Real Estate

Oaxaca is getting easier to reach. Aeroméxico is adding 90 monthly flights and roughly 15,000 monthly seats between Mexico City and Oaxaca's three main airports: Oaxaca City, Huatulco and Puerto Escondido. The biggest change is on the coast. Huatulco flights nearly double from November 2026, and Puerto Escondido flights rise by more than 70% from January 2027.

Key takeaways

  • 90 new monthly frequencies and about 14,900 extra monthly seats, all from Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

  • Huatulco (HUX): 31 to 60 monthly flights, starting November 2026.

  • Puerto Escondido (PXM): 30 to 52 monthly flights, starting January 2027.

  • Oaxaca City (OAX): 141 to 180 monthly flights, starting November 2026.

  • At the same time, Aeroméxico temporarily suspended its Tulum route, citing lower-than-expected demand.

What Aeroméxico announced

The expansion was announced in October 2026 by the Oaxaca state government, which said the extra capacity responds to the high tourist demand expected across the state. Here is how service changes on each route from Mexico City:

  • Huatulco (HUX): 31 → 60 monthly flights (9,600 monthly seats), from November 2026

  • Puerto Escondido (PXM): 30 → 52 monthly flights (9,225 monthly seats), from January 2027

  • Oaxaca City (OAX): 141 → 180 monthly flights (23,114 monthly seats), from November 2026

For the coast, that means about two Aeroméxico flights a day into Huatulco and close to two a day into Puerto Escondido, up from roughly one a day at each.

Why the Oaxaca coast benefits most

The Oaxaca coast is served by two airports about 110 km apart, and most of the coast's beach towns sit between them. More flights into both makes almost every part of the coast easier to reach in a single day from Mexico City, and from anywhere that connects through it.

  • Huatulco is the closest airport to Puerto Ángel, Zipolite and Mazunte, about an hour away by car.

  • Puerto Escondido serves Puerto Escondido itself and the surrounding area, including Bajos de Chila and Ventanilla, and is a little over an hour from Zipolite.

The new flights add to other recent improvements. The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, opened in 2024, cut the drive from Oaxaca City to the coast from 6–8 hours to about 2.5. International access is growing too: WestJet launched seasonal flights between Calgary and Puerto Escondido for winter 2025–2026.

Oaxaca vs. Tulum: airlines are shifting capacity

The announcement came as Aeroméxico temporarily suspended its Mexico City–Tulum flights from October 1, 2026, citing lower-than-expected demand and the need to maximize its route network. Volaris has also announced it will stop flying to Tulum in 2027.

Airlines move aircraft to where demand is growing. Adding capacity to Huatulco and Puerto Escondido while pulling back from Tulum suggests they expect the Oaxaca coast to keep growing. For buyers comparing Mexico's beach markets, it's a useful data point: the Oaxaca coast is still at an earlier stage, with lower-density towns and prices below the Riviera Maya. What better connectivity means for Oaxaca coast real estate

Accessibility is one of the main drivers of a destination's long-term development. More seats and more frequent flights matter to three groups of buyers.

  • Second-home owners can visit more often and on shorter trips, with more flight times to choose from.

  • Vacation-rental investors benefit from a larger pool of travelers who can reach the coast easily, which supports occupancy across more of the year.

  • Long-term buyers tend to see infrastructure such as roads and air routes come before wider recognition of a market.

Flights alone don't set property values. Location, title and the quality of the build still matter most. But connectivity is the foundation that makes a coastal market workable for people who don't live there full time.
